Phil Manzanera
Born 31st January 1951 in London, Phil was surrounded by the exotica of Cuba, Venezuela and Hawaii. A return to London, and school at Dulwich College, brought new heroes, in particular The Beatles and Soft Machine. Phil had taught himself guitar from the age of twelve, and now spent the florescant year of 1967 playing with an acid-rock group. Two years later aged 18, Phil rejected a university place in favour of music, and formed Quiet sun, a moderately successful band fond of rhythmic experimentation. Quiet Sun burnt itself out eventualy and Phil avoided regular guitar work until being invited to join Roxy Music in February 1972 after being the bands sound engineer prior to the departure of original guitarist Davy O'List.
He reformed Quiet Sun and recorded the album Mainstream during the simoultaneous sessions for his debut album Diamond Head. He has gone on to record the criticaly acclaimed live album 801 Live (1976), Listen Now (1977), K-Scope(1978), Primitive Guitars (1982),The Explorers (1985 with Andy Mackay & James Wraith), Wetton Manzanera (1987 with John Wetton), Southern Cross (1990),Manzanera Mackay (1990 with Andy Mackay & James Wraith) Mato Grosso (1990 with Sergio Dias), Moncada Manzanera (1992 with Moncada), Vozero (1999).
He established Expression Records in 1990 and has produced and sessioned for several artists.
